ROOFLIGHT REPLACEMENT
16 Sep, 2021

Should I replace my rooflight when renovating my roof?

If you’re considering a roof renovation on a roof that already has an existing rooflight then are you taking into consideration that it might be time to renovate your rooflight as well? There are several reasons why you should be seriously considering upgrading your rooflight as part of your roof renovation project, one of which will save you time and money..

How thave aefficient roof renovation

Replacing your rooflight at the same time as you renovate your roof will save you both time and money.

While you might want to only fix the original issue, a roof renovation is a great time to be more efficient and give your home an upgrade as well with an improved or brand new rooflight. This is because you’ll need to consider that if you separate the roof renovation and rooflight projects, you’ll need to pay considerably more in labour, roof materials and call-out costs as it’s two separate projects.

Instead, by combining your roof renovation and rooflight upgrade, you’ll be killing two birds with one stone, vastly reducing labour costs and the time that it’ll take to complete them if they were done separately.

Old rooflights onew roof can cause issues

There’s also the old vs new issue you’ll have to consider. Old rooflights were built and fitted to a different roof to the one you’re renovating, therefore, you’ll need to consider whether or not keeping the old rooflight in is the best course of action.

When it comes to a roof renovation, old rooflights can encounter a variety of issues, including:

- Old flashing not being fit for purpose

- Cracks on the rooflight frame

- Difficulties in opening and closing

- Increased condensation issues

- Regular water ingress concerns

This is due to the way the original rooflight was constructed to fit with the existing roof and not the newly renovated roof. The best way to alleviate these concerns is by incorporating a new rooflight into your roof renovation project as it’ll be created to fit in with the new design, instead of having to be retroactively fitted into it.

Rooflights also have a certain lifespan and will need to be replaced eventually, so why not do it now?

Sustainable rooflights make a big difference

If you already have a rooflight then you’ll already know about the benefits it brings, such as year-round natural daylight that seeps into your property and fresh ventilation that brings the delights of nature and combines it with your home.

The tranquillity, calmness and peacefulness of your home can be vastly improved thanks to rooflights, but not only can they make a positive contribution to your home’s environment but also its sustainability. For example, newer rooflights can improve your home’s energy efficiency with seals and technology that will allow you to enjoy a more controlled temperature. The delights of modern rooflights go far beyond how much light it allows in.
